From 2009-2011 I was confused about how my "texts" related to my "images." In order to resolve this confusion, I made a lot of hybrid work during this period. The main, best-resolved project was the glyphs - three series of four pieces, each piece 5"x7" containing an image and a text, rendered in gouache, pencil, and blood on paper.
The glyphs were explicitly made to be "useful," and to be thought of as "tools" (before "artworks"). I have more to say about this if you'd like to talk to me about it. :) Here they are:
